Learn how U.S. visa appointment scheduling works in India, how to review DS-160 details and prepare confidently for a B1/B2 interview.

Understanding the B1/B2 visa

A B1 visa generally covers permitted temporary business activities such as meetings and conferences, while B2 covers tourism, holidays and visits to family or friends. Many applicants receive a combined B1/B2 visa. Neither category permits ordinary employment in the United States.

Step 1: Complete and review your DS-160

Prepare your passport, employment and education history, intended travel details, previous international travel and relevant family information. Answer every question truthfully and consistently. Keep the DS-160 confirmation page and check that the confirmation number used for appointment scheduling is correct. If a DS-160 needs replacing after an appointment has been booked, follow the current official appointment-provider instructions rather than assuming the change is automatic.

Step 2: Pay the fee and use the official scheduling portal

Follow the instructions on the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in India website to access the official visa scheduling service, pay the applicable fee and book the required appointments. For many applicants in India, the process involves a Visa Application Center (VAC) appointment and a consular interview. Some applicants may qualify for an interview waiver, subject to the rules in effect when they apply.

Can you obtain an earlier appointment?

Earlier appointments may appear when the scheduling system releases additional capacity or another applicant changes an appointment. Availability can change quickly, and different locations may have different openings. Review the official portal periodically and respect its rules on login attempts, rescheduling and appointment changes. Avoid agents claiming they control embassy slots or can guarantee a particular date.

What to prepare for the visa interview

Be ready to explain your purpose of travel, intended length of stay, who will pay, your occupation or business, and why you intend to return to India. The interview is not a test of memorised answers: concise, truthful explanations consistent with your DS-160 are more useful than scripted statements. An invitation letter can help explain a visit but does not by itself establish eligibility.

Documents and financial evidence

Bring the mandatory documents listed in your appointment instructions. Depending on your circumstances, useful supporting records can include employment confirmation, recent payslips, business documents, bank statements, income tax records and evidence of your proposed trip. There is no universal published minimum bank balance that guarantees B1/B2 approval.

Common mistakes to avoid

Avoid contradictory employment dates, incorrect DS-160 information, unrealistic itineraries, unexplained funding arrangements and misleading statements about your intentions. Do not purchase non-refundable travel solely on the assumption that a visa will be issued.
